Pharaoh Hound: Malta’s pride and elegance
The hero of the latest release is the Pharaoh Hound (Kelb tal-Fenek) – Malta’s official national dog and one of the oldest and most distinctive breeds of the Mediterranean. Renowned for its extraordinary speed, agility, and keen hunting instinct, the Pharaoh Hound has been an important part of the culture and identity of the Maltese people for centuries. Despite its athletic nature and impressive stature, the breed is known for its remarkably gentle, friendly, and family-oriented character. This noble hound, with its slender silhouette and proud expression, is a living symbol of national pride and of the rich history connecting the Maltese archipelago with the traditions of the ancient world.
Design and symbolism
The design by Natalia Danysz, the creator of the entire series, once again impresses with its meticulous attention to detail and harmonious composition. The obverse features a striking profile of the Pharaoh Hound, with the breed’s distinctive characteristics rendered with almost surgical precision – its long, upright ears, slender muzzle, and smooth coat. The background is decorated with a geometric arrangement of radiating rays, evoking both the symbolism of the sun and the ancient roots associated with the breed’s name. At the heart of the composition is the traditional Maltese cross, tying the elements together. The reverse features the Coat of Arms of Malta, surrounded by a radiant sun motif and cross accents. Together, these elements create a coherent design that strongly emphasizes the official national character of the issue.
