European pilgrims, weary and wounded in their struggle for freedom of belief, could count on the help of the Knights Hospitaller. In the hospice built in the 11th century in Jerusalem many needy people found shelter and solace. Not only did the Knights organise the first hospitals on the European continent, bringing help to thousands of the afflicted, but they also gathered an excellent navy. They led crusades which, after many victories and defeats, brought them to Malta. Here they built a port, a fortress, a hospital and founded a monastic state.
The impressive military potential of the Order of Malta became the inspiration for the series of bullion coins, which Germania Mint issues in cooperation with the Central Bank of Malta. The high quality of minting and precious metals harmonizes with an artistic vision – a modern look at the history of the Knights of Malta.
