After Fenrir’s offspring – Sköll and Hati – devoured the Sun and the Moon, and Loki and Heimdall perished in mortal combat off the shores of Asgard, a deep darkness envelops the mythical world. Germania Mint presents the third installment of the exceptional numismatic series Ragnarök – a chapter dedicated to one of the most iconic and dramatic duels in all of Germanic mythology: the clash between Thor, the God of Thunder, and Jörmungandr, the giant Midgard Serpent.
This is a story of power, a vain attempt to outsmart destiny, and a battle in which there are no victors.
Prophecy, pride, and paradox
It all began with fear. When the völva delivered the dark prophecy of Ragnarök – the twilight of the gods – to Odin, the Allfather learned that it was the monstrous children of Loki and the giantess Angrboða who would bring doom upon the gods. Seeking to halt fate, Odin decided to isolate the mischievous god’s offspring. The wolf Fenrir was bound with magical chains, Hel was banished to the underworld, and the serpent Jörmungandr was cast into the abyss of the ocean surrounding Midgard, the realm of mortals.
Yet, the pride of the gods birthed an irony of fate. Throwing Jörmungandr into the turbulent waters did not stop the prophecy – the monster grew in secret until his colossal body encircled the entire world and he could grasp his own tail. The attempt to avoid destiny had, in reality, nurtured the greatest threat to the pantheon.
From the giant catch to the final clash
Before the apocalyptic battle took place, the paths of Thor and the Midgard Serpent crossed in a famous myth about a sea expedition. Thor, disguised as a young man, went fishing with the giant Hymir. As bait, he used the severed head of a mighty ox. When he cast his hook into the deepest waters of the ocean, it was caught by Jörmungandr himself. Enraged, the god pulled the beast toward the surface with terrifying strength, but the panicked giant Hymir cut the line, allowing the serpent to swim away into the depths.
However, what was meant to happen was already written. During Ragnarök, Jörmungandr emerges from the ocean, spitting venom and causing destructive waves. As Thor stands face to face with the beast, he knows his final hour has struck. After a long, bloody battle, the giant monster’s body collapses under the blow of Mjölnir.
Yet the God of Thunder escapes this clash for only a moment - after taking nine steps, he falls lifeless, poisoned by the Serpent's venom.

A cycle that continues
Ragnarök is a story of an inevitable end, but also of the seed of rebirth hidden within every destruction. The clash between Thor and Jörmungandr demonstrates the price the world pays for attempting to deceive its own destiny.
Yet this is not the end of the mythical journey with Germania Mint. The third installment of the series closes another bloody episode of the twilight of the gods while opening the doors to the upcoming chapters of this epic saga. The next coin will soon tell another story etched into the fate of the gods…
