Forged by the famous dwarven masters – the Sons of Ivaldi – the spear Gungnir was created as a gift worthy of Odin, the supreme ruler of the Germanic pantheon. It was engineered as the perfect weapon: once cast into the air, it bypassed every obstacle to strike its target without fail. In Germanic sagas, Gungnir became a symbol of divine authority, wisdom, and the inevitability of fate. According to legend, Odin would initiate battles by casting the spear above the heads of opposing troops -s erving as a harbinger of victory.

Minting craftsmanship intertwined with mythology

Designed by Mateusz Frąckowiak, the 2026 issue brings this iconic weapon to life with extraordinary attention to detail and narrative depth:

  • Dual-sided relief and Valknut symbolism: The obverse and reverse depict both sides of the legendary spear. Centered on one side is the powerful Valknut symbol-Odin’s emblem representing fate and the connection to fallen warriors.

  • Contrasting nature in the background: The background of the coin tells the story of the life cycle and Ragnarök-on one side, the spear is surrounded by dormant, leafless branches symbolizing the approaching twilight of the gods, while the other features dense, vibrant leaves of the mystical tree Yggdrasil.

  • Intricately decorated guard and artistry: Forged by the dwarves, the weapon impresses with rich ornamentation: from the wrapped hilt to elaborate scenes of Odin on Sleipnir accompanied by Huginn, Muninn, and Fenrir, down to the runic inscriptions.
