Have you ever wondered what the world looked like when humans were not the only contenders for the title of ruler? Germania Mint invites you on an extraordinary journey to the era of Megafauna – an age when nature itself set the laws of existence, and creatures of unimaginable power roamed the lands of ancient Germania and all of Europe.
Echoes of the Ice Age
This is not just another series about animals. Megafauna is a tribute to the giants that, thousands of years ago, traversed the same valleys and forests we live in today. We are fascinated by their strength, their primal majesty, and the beauty of a world long lost – a world that still slumbers beneath layers of ice and earth. In selecting these specific species, we focused on the power of nature that once dominated the European continent.
It was a reign of absolute power, inextricably linked to the harshness of the ice and the frozen steppes. However, this era of giants began to fade with the arrival of the great thaw. As the harsh winter gave way and open spaces were overtaken by dense forests, the ancient rulers lost their kingdom. Climate change meant that these powerful beings, so perfectly adapted to the frost, could not find their place in a new, warmer world. Their roar fell silent forever, leaving behind only a legend that we now bring back to life in precious metal.
The series will present six legendary rulers, whose tracks will lead us through subsequent releases:
-
Cave Lion – a mighty predator and the hero of the first coin.
-
Giant Deer – a symbol of elegance and unimaginable scale.
-
Woolly Mammoth – the icon of the Ice Age.
-
Cave Bear – the fearsome inhabitant of ancient caverns.
-
Aurochs – the primal strength of the European wilderness.
-
Woolly Rhinoceros – the armored giant of the frozen steppes.
The first predator of the series
The epitome of courage and dominance, the Cave Lion was the undisputed king of the glacial steppes. Significantly larger than modern lions, it represented the apex of the ecosystem. The Cave Lion is not simply a “bigger lion” – it is a distinct, fascinating species. Individuals could weigh as much as 400–500 kg, making them some of the largest felines in Earth’s history. Analysis of ancient cave paintings suggests that males did not possess the characteristic mane. They were animals with thick, yellow-gray fur, perfectly adapted to a raw, frozen climate.
A numismatic treasure map
What truly sets this series apart is the unique design of the reverse. While the Cave Lion’s skull and paw print take center stage, the true magic happens on the edges. There, you will find the tracks of the other five animals that will appear in the series.
This serves as a preview – by holding the first coin, the collector holds a map of the entire future collection.
