The issuance of the Maltese Ox is the result of long-standing and fruitful cooperation between Germania Mint and the Central Bank of Malta. This partnership guarantees not only the authenticity and official status of each coin but also a shared mission to celebrate Maltese heritage. The Central Bank of Malta is our valued, long-term partner, with whom we continuously carry out successful projects, such as the popular Golden Eagle bullion and the esteemed Knights of the Past collector series. This cooperation is the foundation upon which we build subsequent numismatic masterpieces, including the Maltese Ox.

The Maltese Ox was once one of the most important animals on the island. As a resilient draft animal, Gendus was a pillar of agriculture, assisting in fieldwork for generations. With the advent of mechanization, its role vanished, and its population sharply declined. Today, purebred individuals are practically non-existent. Only a few remaining mixed breeds survive, which constitute a valuable, though endangered, element of the Maltese ecosystem.
Through the choice of Gendus, Germania Mint pays tribute not only to the animal but also to strength, endurance, and majesty – qualities that resonate with the spirit of the Maltese people themselves. The series, initiated by the Maltese Bee, has become an ambassador for the island’s heritage and biodiversity, celebrating unique species that require protection.

Just like its multi-award-winning predecessor, the Maltese Ox coin preserves the unique, octagonal shape that has become the hallmark of this series. The design, again created by Natalia Danysz, Chief Product Officer at Germania Mint, reinterprets the background and symbolism:
Design and Challenge: The design of the Maltese Ox was an artistic challenge, as many coins featuring the image of a bull or ox already exist on the market. However, thanks to the unique design and meticulous attention to detail, the coin gained a fresh, unique, and exceptionally richly decorated form.
Obverse: The central point of the design is the powerful head of the Maltese Ox, surrounded by delicate waves symbolizing the wind and the sea of Maltese nature. These dynamic waves replace the honeycomb structure, alluding to the golden fields and blue sky surrounding the island. The Maltese Crosses are clearly visible on the design, linking numismatics with the tradition and history of the state.
Reverse: The coat of arms of the Central Bank of Malta is located in the center, and the entirety is once again surrounded by the wind and waves of the Maltese landscape, emphasizing the coin’s connection to the island.
Similar to the previous release, the second coin in the series is issued in two variants:

The Maltese Ox coin serves as a symbolic reminder of the fragility of Malta’s natural heritage and the necessity of protecting biodiversity. This collector’s masterpiece awaits to tell its story.
