The first Maltese Bee coin was minted in 1977 by the Central Bank of Malta to honor the native honeybee species – Apis mellifera ruttneri. This species, found exclusively on the Maltese islands, is a crucial pollinator of plants and a symbol of local biodiversity and ecological independence.
Bees have held an important place in Maltese culture since the time of the Phoenicians, who initiated beekeeping on the islands. In medieval times, honey production became a valuable part of Malta’s economy. The bee itself stands as a symbol of values such as hard work, cooperation, and care for nature – qualities that are cherished by the Maltese people.
The 1977 coin was a collector’s tribute to this unique species. Its design accurately depicted the native bee, giving the coin a deep cultural significance. This was one of the earliest efforts to honor this small yet essential creature, whose role in the island’s ecosystem remains invaluable.
In 2024, Germania Mint, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Malta, celebrated Malta’s monetary heritage with the release of a modern version of the Maltese Bee coin. This new edition continues the tradition while representing a harmonious blend of history and modernity.
The coin stands out with its original shape reminiscent of a honeycomb – an emblem of diligence, collaboration, and unity. The obverse of the coin features a bee with exquisite detailing, its anatomical features rendered in a lifelike manner. This precision in capturing detail reflects the essence of contemporary numismatic art, using advanced technology to craft coins that are small works of art.
The 2024 release includes two versions of the coin, differing in weight and finish:
2024 Malta Maltese Bee 5 Euro 1 oz Silver BU – a 1-ounce coin, enriched with ruthenium and gold. This limited edition of 1,000 pieces comes in a capsule with a wooden box and sleeve, along with a Certificate of Authenticity.
2024 Malta Maltese Bee 10 Euro 2 oz Silver BU High Relief – a 2-ounce, high-relief version coated in ruthenium with gold-plated details. This edition is limited to 500 pieces, each accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity in an elegant wooden display case.
The modern coin not only references Maltese history but also includes symbols deeply rooted in the island’s culture and natural environment. The honeycomb-inspired background suggests themes of cooperation and community, while the realistically rendered bee highlights the harmony between humanity and nature. The coin’s design expresses Malta’s reverence for its natural heritage, underscoring the importance of protecting unique species like the native honeybee. The bee motifs echo tradition but also speak to modern initiatives in environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The Maltese Bee is a prime example of engaged numismatics – a coin that not only commemorates an important aspect of Malta’s heritage but also raises awareness of environmental protection and biodiversity. It is a symbol of tradition, innovation, and love for nature, inspiring action in support of the environment.
Thanks to initiatives like this coin by Germania Mint, future generations can appreciate the value of natural heritage and be reminded of their role in preserving it.
