Gjallarhorn – The Magical Horn of Heimdall Launches the New Artefacts Series

The new Artefacts coin series by Germania Mint transports collectors into the captivating world of Germanic mythology. Among gods, giants, and beasts, powerful magical objects played pivotal roles in epic tales. The Artefacts series naturally continues the narrative of the earlier Ragnarök collection, this time shifting the focus from characters to the iconic objects that shaped the mythical end of the world.

Gjallarhorn – The Horn of Heimdall and Herald of Ragnarök

The series opens with Gjallarhorn, the legendary horn of Heimdall, the vigilant guardian of Asgard. With his extraordinary vision and hearing, Heimdall protected the rainbow bridge Bifrost, which connected the realm of the gods to Midgard, the world of humans. When Ragnarök begins, Heimdall will sound Gjallarhorn, its thunderous blast resonating across all nine worlds. This powerful sound will alert the gods to the impending danger and mark the beginning of the ultimate battle between gods and giants.

A Numismatic Tribute to Gjallarhorn

The coin beautifully depicts the legendary horn of Heimdall, encircled by a runic ring composed of a rune shield and Nornic patterns. Intricate designs on the horn’s surface illustrate key events from Ragnarök, along with runes and the chains of Fenrir, symbolizing the forces of chaos.

On the obverse, corresponding to the horn’s front, three crucial scenes from Ragnarök are brought to life. A mistletoe arrow entwined with Norn threads symbolizes the weapon Loki used to cause Baldur’s death, an event that triggered the series of tragedies leading to Ragnarök. Loki is depicted aboard a drakkar, setting sail with giants and beasts toward the roots of Yggdrasil to engage in the final battle with the gods. Completing the imagery are three brave warriors sent by Odin to confront a terrifying, unknown beast.

The reverse, corresponding to the back of the horn, continues the story with the moment Sköll and Hati devour the Sun and Moon, marking Ragnarök’s progression. The dramatic scene of Odin’s climactic battle with Fenrir follows, ending in the tragic demise of the All-Father. Finally, Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, entwined with the body of the serpent Jormungand, represents their ultimate confrontation. Although Thor defeats the serpent, he succumbs to its venom.

This intricate design by Mateusz Frąckowiak captures the essence of these mythological events, exemplifying Germania Mint’s craftsmanship and dedication to detail.
