Nerthus, goddess of fertility, earth, and nature, was worshiped as the protector of crops and the cycles of life, ensuring abundant harvests and peace among her followers. It was believed that when she was among the people, all conflicts ceased, and the land yielded plentifully.
Each year, during sacred rituals, priests would carry her statue in a procession around the island where she resided. The statue was placed on a flower-adorned cart, drawn by white cows, symbols of fertility. This ceremony was meant to secure the earth’s abundance for the coming summer. After the procession, Nerthus’ statue was ritually cleansed by slaves, who were then sacrificed, symbolizing her purification after the sacred rites.
Gefion was the patroness of virgins, a goddess of fertility and abundance. She was also endowed with the ability to foresee the future, making her a figure of great wisdom and influence. She married one of Odin’s sons and gave rise to the royal dynasty of Denmark.
She had four giant sons, whom she transformed into oxen and harnessed to a plow after the king of Sweden promised her as much land as she could plow in one night. This demonstrates her cleverness and power in achieving her goals.
Frigg, the goddess and wife of Odin, was the protector of marriages, the hearth, the household, health, and also the sky and clouds, enabling her to bring rain. She received the gift of omniscience from Odin, allowing her to see into the future, though she could not alter the course of events.
Frigg was destined to weep twice in the history of the world: first, when her son Baldur died, and second, during Ragnarök, when Odin met his demise.
Gullweig – the goddess of wealth, which she herself symbolised, beautiful and shining. Being “living gold”, she aroused people’s desire and thirst for wealth. For this reason, attempts were made to burn her three times, after which, like eternal, indestructible gold, she was reborn even more beautiful and radiant (this refers to the alchemical process of hardening bullion). Over time, she became the epitome of demoralising desire and evil female magic.
Sigyn, the wife of Loki, the god of fire, death and lies, was the opposite of her husband. Despite his countless mischief and infamous deeds, Sigyn remained steadfastly loyal and devoted until Ragnarok itself. She was not only his lifelong companion, but also his support during his most difficult moments. One of her most famous gestures of devotion was holding a bowl over his head to protect him from the drops of venom that dripped down on him from the snake. Her attitude symbolizes patience, devotion and constancy towards loved ones, even in the face of danger.
Freyja was the most important Germanic goddess – the ruler of love, beauty, fertility and war. This most venerable of goddesses had her seat in the heavens. Odin’s wife and Freyr’s twin sister appeared on battlefields with the help of the Valkyries, whom she led. She was fond of gold and jewels. When she shed tears while crying for her lost beloved, the tears turned into red gold (rubies), which she wore as a necklace called Brisingamen, shining with tremendous brilliance.
