We proudly present a new coin that brings Croatian legend to life – the 2024 Trsat Dragon 6 Euro 2 oz Silver BU. This extraordinary release is the result of a collaboration between the Croatian National Bank, the Croatian Mint, and Germania Mint. Together, we have crafted a numismatic piece inspired by the rich history and mythology of Croatia. The coin showcases the historic Trsat Dragon – a basilisk that stood as the protector of Trsat Fortress, embodying the ideals of strength and defense. Among the various editions, the 2-ounce silver coin, ennobled by Germania Mint, stands out for its exquisite finish and striking character.

The Guardian Dragon of Trsat

Who was the legendary basilisk? In medieval Europe, basilisks were feared as supernatural creatures capable of killing with a single glance. Combining the features of a serpent, dragon, and rooster, they were often associated with destruction. However, the basilisk of Trsat was different – it became a guardian and protector in the folklore of Rijeka.

According to legend, the basilisk watched over Trsat Fortress for centuries, shielding it and its inhabitants from invaders and calamities. Its presence was said to deter anyone with ill intentions towards Rijeka. As a result, the Trsat Dragon became a symbol of protection and strength, inspiring the locals to believe they had a powerful guardian always watching over them.

In the 19th century, Count Laval Nugent, captivated by the legend of Trsat, commissioned the renowned Viennese sculptor Anton Dominik Fernkorn to create statues of the basilisk. These sculptures not only adorned Trsat Fortress but also left a significant mark on Croatian art, becoming an enduring tribute to the mythical protector.
