He stopped the Sun, moved the Earth
On the occasion of the 550th anniversary of the birth of Poland’s most famous astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, Germania Mint has issued a unique gold coin – 2023 Malta Copernicus 100 Euro 1 oz Gold BU.
Nicolaus Copernicus launched the scientific revolution and had a significant impact on its development. His most important achievement is the heliocentric theory, which stated that the Earth and other planets revolve around the Sun, not the other way around, as was believed at the time. Copernicus published this theory in his work entitled “De revolutionibus orbium coelestium” (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres).
The obverse of the coin is an image of a scholar, gazing at the Sun, ennobled with rose gold. The reverse is a 16th century solar system, the coat of arms of the Central Bank of Malta and the mint mark of Germania Mint. The coin, designed by Natalia Danysz, is offered in 200 numbered pieces and packed in a wooden box, that not only protects it, but also allows the coin to be attractively displayed.
